Big Wins For Froch, Bellew and Broner!

By Niall Doran

Starting off boxing results in the UK with Carl Froch vs Yusaf Mack. What a performance by the Cobra. He gave his home fans in Nottingham an electrifying performance where he totally dominated and outclassed Mack inside 3 rounds. He looked to me to be a man who had somehow improved yet again since his huge win over Lucian Bute earlier this year. He looked much too strong for Mack, who was coming down from light heavyweight to challenge for Froch’s IBF belt. Froch was hardly getting out of gear in round 1 and had Mack down and had him down again in the second, punching his gum shield out of his mouth in the process. In the 3rd Froch started mixing it up to the head and body and sent him down with a devastating left hook to the solar plexus which ended the night. Froch vs Kessler or Ward rematches in 2013? The world is once again Froch’s oyster.

In the supporting main event in Nottingham Tony Bellew survived a horrible cut to run out clear points winner against the awkward and tricky Argentinian Roberto Bolonti. Bellew started like a train on the front foot and made his intentions clear that he was looking for a knockout. Bellew dropped Bolonti in the first round with a right hand to the top of the head and had him down again in the third with a left hook. However towards the end of the round Bolonti connected with a left hook that opened a horrendous gash above Bellew’s right eye with the blood clearly giving him trouble with his vision. Luckily for Bellew he had one of the best cut men in the business in Mick Williamson, who stemmed the blood flow and allowed Tony to outbox Bolonti for the duration of the bout. There is talks that the fight was an eliminator of sorts for Chad Dawson’s WBC crown for next year, what a fight that would be for the Bomber!

Elsewhere in boxing results stateside in Atlantic City, Adrien Broner put on a scintillating display to become two weight world champion, dethroning Antonio DeMarco for the WBC crown, with an 8th round stoppage. From the start it was clear that Broner was in a different class to DeMarco. Broner was the much smaller man but simply too fast, too accurate and had too good a defense for DeMarco. It was almost like watching a young Floyd Mayweather. He gradually broke DeMarco down round by round with a fantastic mixture of punch selection and impeccable defensive skills. Finally in the 8th round he put DeMarco down with the referee mercifully waving the fight off at the same time as his corner through in the towel. 2013, Ricky Burns unification fight? I think it would be one of the fights of the year for 2013!
